at what point in history do you think americans stopped having british accents

image

Actually, Americans still have the original British accent. We kept it over time and Britain didn’t. What we currently coin as a British accent developed in England during the 19th century among the upper class as a symbol of status. Historians often claim that Shakespeare sounds better in an American accent.

Do you understand how scary this picture is

god forbid a real person do real person things he wasnt just a robot who killed people jesus fucking christ

uh yeah its not like he killed and tortured six million jews or anything

Hold on just a tick. Listen, I’m Jewish, so I’m perfectly capable of understanding that what he did was just…..well, there are no words for it. But let’s not round it up to simply Jews that got killed. It was six million people that died in those camps, not just Jews. Did you know that homosexuals were sent there, too? Yeah, I’m sure you did. They had to wear special little symbols on their clothes. Do you know what it was? It was a pink triangle.
It was six million PEOPLE.
But you let that roll over in your mind for a while and you are going to forever see this man as a monster, but that’s not what he was. He was someone who thought he was truly doing something right for his nation, no matter how shitty he was doing it. Believe me when I say that I don’t like him. I really don’t. My grandfather’s brothers died in those camps, and my grandfather escaped to Spain, then to Mexico. He was lucky.
This is not a monster holding hands with a little girl.
This is Adolf Hitler, a man, holding hands with a little girl.
Yeah. It’s fucking scary. It really is. Do you know why?
It’s because you’re seeing that he wasn’t, in fact, a monster. You’re seeing in this picture that he was a man. He was a man, and that’s really the saddest part of it all.

As a History major who specializes in the history of early modern Europe, I’ve studied a lot of dictators in detail, not just Hitler. The number one mistake anyone could ever make in history is making the assumption that only inhuman monsters are capable of doing terrible things. Stop dehumanizing Hitler just so you can reassure yourself that “normal” humans aren’t capable of doing bad things. Hitler liked children and dogs, he was a vegetarian and he cried like a little boy when his mother died. I’m not saying he was a good, innocent person, but when you stop attributing human characteristics to historical figures like Hitler, it’s how you overlook people just like him in real life, and it’s how people like him end up back in power.

That’s the real truth: Human Beings are scarier than any ‘monsters’ out there because we’re all born blank slates and BECOME our legacy.

This is the best post I’ve seen in a while.

This is always going to be my favourite post

It does make sense. Still..there’d be hell to pay.

Amen
you guys are all fucking nuts. im not gonna capitalize shit and use big words to make point. he killed THOUSANDS of innocent fucking children. you know he used to rip off girls’s boobs while they were alive and stick cow breasts on them to make fun of them?? did you know he used to do random mutilations on pregnant women so that their babies turn out to be abnormal JUST FOR FUN? yeah hes a fucking human, cuz he has a fucking heart beat, but hes  a twisted, evil, EVIL, HEARTLESS man. yeah hes fucking heartless, because he stood back and allowed and compelled so many fucking deaths. you all sound like idiots. amen to that bitches.

Well of course we get the fact that you think he’s disgusting, he is, but what the other people are trying to say is that any ‘normal’ person can end up just like him. Our whole world never learns from its mistakes, and Hitler is someone we can learn from. Leaders are still being elected, and you could say they are ‘normal’ and Hitler was ‘normal’ too but he became mad or obsessed with power. Everyone just has to be careful with the decisions that they make because it could make a huge difference to this planet.

I’ve been struggling with this a whole lot. Does the action equal the person? Can we separate the deed from the human, or are they one and the same? Less extreme examples can be seen today in, say, in an abusive husband. Can we continue to hate what he is and what he’s done, even in his little moments of humanity? When he beats his wife but is later seen feeding and singing to his baby girl - what should we think?
This is where Hitler comes in. He’s holding the hand of a little girl. Does that mess with the image of him you’ve had in your mind? Seeing this makes us uncomfortable because we seem to be completely set on seeing him as what his actions were; monstrous, atrocious, and unforgivable. I understand - it’s just easier to think that way.
But see, his fault was that he let his delusional view of the perfect society relentlessly snatch away the rights of others and murder 6 million people. I’m not defending his actions - heaven knows that’s not what I aim to do - but we must be willing to distinguish the atrocities he caused from the human being he was, apart from his mental illness and delusional state. We have to look at what it means to be human, how drastically things can change within oneself - how each and everyone of us can be both a monster and a human being simultaneously.
